STATE SYMBOLS
          NEVADA STATE BIRD:
Mountain Bluebird: Bluebirds are found all over the Silver state of Nevada. They are found at elevations above 5,000 feet, and they nest in open areas such as meadows, hayfields, grain fields, savannas, prairies, clear cuts, and the edge of coniferous and deciduous forests.

                      STATE FISH
Lahontan Cutthroat Trout: Durring the latter part of the 1800s and early 1900s, Lahontan cutthroat trout was commercially fished by the ton in the desert lakes of Nevada. Individual fish grew up to 20-60 pounds in Pyramid and Walker lakes, and in Tahoe. But, by the early 1940s these fish had largely disappeared. Today these lakes harbor popular sport fisheries, but the big fish of yester year remain only as memories.
The first flag flown beginning in 1905 reflects Nevada's most famous mineral resources, silver and gold. The thirty six stars represent Nevada's position as the thirty sixth state to enter the union.
NEVADA STATE FLAGS

In 1915, the  flag was changed to add the Nevada State Coat of Arms to the flag. The thirty six gold and silver stars, were re-sized and re-arranged around the Arms and the words "All for our Country" were displayed below.

Since 1929 the Nevada State Flag has remained unchanged. The legislature has ordered that the state flag remain the same.

NEVADA'S HISTORY

Although Soain claimed the Nevada region during the 1500s, no exploration occured until the early 1800s. Native Americans living there at the same time included the Paiute, Shoshone, and Washoe tribes. During the 1820s, trappers from the Hudson Bay company explored the Humbolt river. Jedediah Smith traveled across the Las Vegas valley and William Wolfskill blazed the Old Spanish Trail. Complete exploration of Nevada occured during the 1840s; John C Fremont explored and charted the Great Basin and Sierra Nevada. At the end of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), the southwest came under U.S. control. In 1850, the Utah Territory, that included Nevada, was established. Nevada did not have a large enough population to become a state during the Civil War. However, Prestdent Lincoln saw that most Nevadans were anti-slavery and the North was in desperate need of silver and gold to help pay for the war. On October 31, 1864, Nevada became the 36th state of the union with Carson City as its capital.                            TIME LINE
